Jennifer is a dancer, choreographer, and Senior Lecturer in Dance at Teesside University.
Originally from Canada, Jennifer danced for the Canadian Children’s Dance Theatre, TRIP Dance Company, and Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers before moving to London. In the UK she danced in the feature films Anna Karenina and Les Miserables as well as for companies/choreographers including Gary Clarke, Rosie Kay, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Levantes Dance Theatre, and Tmesis Theatre.
Her work fuses contemporary dance with technology and audience interaction. Her first work in the North East, REPLICAS premiered at the Stockton International Riverside Festival. The work was built from the verbatim text messages of real couples in love which are sent to the audience in real-time throughout the performance.
In 2016, Jennifer Essex and poet and UNESCO Bridges of Struga award-winner, Harry Man, formed Fully Booked Theatre, specialising in theatre for young audiences, creating their first show together, Space Rebel Princess. It quickly captured the imaginations of audiences, being picked up by Greenbelt Festival, Microdot, Waterside Arts Centre, and Stockton International Riverside Festival (among others).
The pair have continued to collaborate and in 2020 they are cooking up something new!
